Pneumocystis jiroveci trophozoites in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) material; Giemsa stain.  The trophozoite are small (size: 1 to 5 µm), and only their nuclei, stained purple, are visible (arrows).  AIDS patient seen in Atlanta,  Georgia.
